Chapter Fifteen

Macsen

Though I had only slept a few hours during the night, I’d never felt so settled—so at ease. Jett was mine, now, fully and completely.

Even after my colossal screwup.

As he moved, I kept him in the cage of my arms, scared to let go yet worried he might leave and not return, especially since I had a secret.

Mates didn’t have secrets.

They were open and honest—sharing every facet of their lives, even when things got tough. Jett was mine forever and I couldn’t bear not telling him.

“You’re awake, alpha. I heard your breathing change. Your heartbeat is all over the place.”

I moved to kiss the top of his head. Gods, he was so sweet-smelling. I would never get over it. It permeated my skin and was inside me, all around me. “I’m just overthinking this morning, I suppose.”

“About what?” He pulled back and looked at me, paled in the light of the morning sun.

This wasn’t the way I wanted the morning after to go, but this anvil had to be lifted from my chest.

“My father was the alpha of a very prominent and successful pride in most ways. But over the decades, the numbers dwindled and, when he passed, there weren’t enough tigers for me to have a pride, really. Some had moved on. Some had had trouble because they were too stubborn to accept a mate that wasn’t a tiger. We began to die off.”

Jett’s eyebrows bunched. I moved to sit with the headboard as my support and cradled him in my arms. I hoped he didn’t hate me for keeping this from him. “Go on.”

“Well, when that happened, I moved out here. I dated a bit, eager to find my mate, but they all wanted me for reasons that had nothing to do with who I was.”

“What reasons were they, mate?” His voice was so sweet.

“My father had left me a trust fund. A very large trust fund. In my younger years, I flaunted it. Found omegas that I thought loved me but, in the end, they only wanted what I could buy them or give to them. They wanted me for my money. After this happened over and over, I decided to keep my money to myself. I let it sit in the trust, earning interest. I took a job at Table for Two and lived as the host salary allowed. I didn’t
